5083 and 5086 Aluminum

Strong alloys with excellent corrosion resistance

5083 and 5086 aluminum are relatively strong metals, suitable for a wide range of industries. Their strong corrosion resistance, good weldability, high strength-to-weight ratio, and excellent performance in extremely low temperatures make them ideal for aerospace, marine, construction, transportation, and other applications.

These versatile aluminum alloys have good formability and moderate machinability, allowing them to maintain integrity while being shaped and fabricated.

Shapes and forms

As a supplier of 5083 and 5086 aluminum, we buy and sell 5083 and 5086 sheet, plate, and coil. We have or can help you find the aluminum that fits your specific needs or purchase your excess inventory.

Applications for 5083 and 5086 aluminum

Because 5083 and 5086 aluminum have similar compositions they are used in many of the same industries, including:

  • Marine craft and other marine applications
  • Containers
  • Pressure vessels and tanks
  • Rail and elevator cars
  • Body panels for trucks and trailers
  • Vehicle armor
  • Bridges, cranes, and roof trusses
  • Storage tanks for cryogenics

In addition to these applications, 5083 aluminum is also used in:

  • Aerospace components
  • Tool and die making

Tempers

Tempering is a process which enhances particular properties of a metal. Some of our most commonly requested tempers for 5083 and 5086 aluminum include:

  • 5083 h112 aluminum
  • 5083 h321 aluminum
  • 5086 h111 aluminum
  • 5086 h116 aluminum
  • 5086 h32 aluminum

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are 5083 aluminum’s properties?

5083 aluminum’s main alloy is magnesium, which makes it one of the strongest non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys. It has good weldability, conductivity, and formability, and its strong resistance to corrosion makes it a popular choice for marine environments and other applications that require high performance in harsh conditions.

What are 5086 aluminum’s properties?

5086 aluminum has similar properties to 5083 aluminum including high strength, weldability, conductivity, formability, and strong corrosion resistance. But because it usually contains slightly less magnesium, it is not quite as strong as 5083 aluminum.

How would you compare 5083 vs. 5086 aluminum?

5083 and 5086 aluminum alloys are both composed primarily of aluminum and magnesium, giving them high strength, weldability, conductivity, formability, and strong corrosion resistance. But the two alloys have a slightly different composition, which has a small effect on their properties.  5083 aluminum is somewhat stronger than 5086, but 5086 aluminum is slightly more weldable and is a bit more corrosion-resistant than 5083.

Is 5083 aluminum good for welding?

Yes, 5083 aluminum has excellent weldability, performing well with conventional welding methods while maintaining its strength after welding.

Is 5086 aluminum good for welding?

Yes, 5086 aluminum is a superior choice for welding with slightly better weldability then 5083 aluminum.

What are 5083 aluminum and 5086 aluminum used for?

5083 and 5086 aluminum are used for a variety of applications, including ship building and other marine construction, pressure tanks, rail cars, trucks and trailers, armored vehicles, bridges, cranes, roof trusses, and cryogenics. 5083 aluminum is also commonly used for aerospace and tool & die making.

How would you compare 5086 aluminum vs. 6061 aluminum?

5086 and 6061 aluminum both contain aluminum and magnesium as primary alloying elements, but where 5086 also contains manganese, which contributes to its high resistance to corrosion, 6061 has silicon, making it more machinable.
