1100 Aluminum

1100 grade aluminum

A superior choice for workability

1100 series aluminum has a unique set of properties that make it a strong choice for a variety of applications. Highly resistant to corrosion, this low-strength alloy has excellent forming characteristics as well as high thermal and electrical conductivity.  1100 aluminum can be anodized and finished with conversion coating to further enhance properties, such as corrosion resistance. It is unmatched by any other commercial aluminum alloy in workability as it can be welded, brazed and soldered.

Shapes and forms

We buy and sell 1100 aluminum sheet, plate and coil. As your 1100 aluminum suppliers, we can provide you with the form and thickness that fits your application or purchase your excess inventory.

Applications

The exceptional workability, formability, and corrosion resistance of 1100 series aluminum make it ideal for applications that require fabricated materials that can stand up to punishing environments, such as:

  • Aircraft components
  • Architectural trim
  • Spun hollowware
  • Processing equipment
  • Kitchen utensils
  • Fin stock
  • Name plates
  • Rivets
  • Reflectors
  • Sheet metal

Tempers

At Cumberland Diversified Metals, we trade in a variety of 1100 aluminum tempers. Some of our most popular tempers include:

  • 1100 H12 aluminum
  • 1100 H14 aluminum
  • 1100 H16 aluminum
  • 1100 H18 aluminum
  • 1100 O aluminum

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are 1100 aluminum’s properties?

Foremost among 1100 aluminum’s properties is its high corrosion resistance, which makes it ideal for applications that are exposed to punishing elements. It’s also easy to fabricate due to its superior formability and ability to be welded, soldered, and brazed.

What is 1100 aluminum’s composition?

With a minimum of 99% aluminum, 1100 aluminum is considered commercially pure aluminum. The remaining 1% is often composed of trace amounts of iron, silicon (Si) and/or other elements.

What is 1100 aluminum’s density?

1100 aluminum has a density of approximately 2.70 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³) at room temperature. Its relatively low density and light weight make 1100 aluminum a common choice for aerospace and other applications that prioritize high strength to weight ratios.

How is 1100 aluminum’s machineability?

Soft and ductile, 1100 aluminum has high machineability, making it ideal for precise drilling, cutting, and shaping with a variety of processes.

Aluminum 1100 vs. 5052: which is better?

1100 aluminum vs. 5052 aluminum: which is better depends on your application. Each has distinct characteristics that make it suitable for specific applications. 1100 aluminum has superior formability and workability, whereas 5052 aluminum is stronger than 1100. Both grades have high corrosion resistance. 1100 is frequently used in applications that value formability and durability, such as aerospace, while 5052 is commonly chosen for applications that need strength in harsh environments, such as automotive and marine.

Aluminum: 1100 vs. 6061: which is better?

The best choice primarily depends on what you’re using it for. 1100 aluminum has the advantage in corrosion resistance and formability. Whereas 6061 aluminum is stronger than 1100, and its strength can be increased even further through heat treatment, if desired. 1100 is more commonly used in applications such as architectural trim, while 6061’s superior strength makes it a solid choice for high-stress applications such as automotive.
